Gigee CALL Program: The opening

“Gigee Gosling  in Mexico” is another Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) program we developed. This multimedia is designed to assist students in learning recount text individually, or guided by teachers in a classroom context. The text we created is concise and hopefully not only able to help students gaining a better understanding about recount text, but also entertainment (Edutainment).

Gigee CALL program scene

The text tells us about Gigee’s personal experience of her first migration from her home in Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. Gigee is a personification of a gosling. The text is also written with the purpose to give students knowledge about Canada Geese migration. Indeed, the story inspired by the true facts of Canada Geese migration in America.

Gigee Gosling in Mexico CALL program meets our need of learning listening and reading recount text, which is why we provide a story in two ways, with and without text while we are watching the animation. The material also attached in the program, it can be learned by students themselves or presented by teacher in the class. In order to avoid student’s boredom in doing exercise, the program is equipped with an interactive “drag and drop” game, and interactive quiz to evaluate students understanding about recount text. Hopefully the program will come in useful for you.

Too-too-moo and the Giant CARE tutorial program is the animated version of “Too-too-moo and the Giant a Tale of Indonesia”. It is created by Satriadi Basuki (2010) using Macromedia Flash 8 aimed to assist English learner in learning a narrative story. The length of  the story is for about 767 words, with the background of Javanese culture.  The program also provides some features in learning reading narrative, like the explanation of narrative texts, vocabulary, interactive game and quiz, and etc which are package well in colorful design and layout.

The story tells about a poor little Too-too-moo and her mother who had to feed a giant who came to their house every day, since if they did not feed him, he would eat Too-too-moo instead. When Too-too-moo was left at home by her mother who went to the market, Too-too-moo was eaten by the giant because she ate a quarter of giant’s porridge made by her mother. Will the story end here? “People String adaiah sebuah situs pertemanan sepeti layaknya Facebook, tapi bedanya di People String kita dibayar atas aktifitas yang kita lakukan.”

Apa sih People String ini?

Bedanya, People String membagi-bagikan keuntungannya kepada setiap anggota.

Kongkritnya inilah manfaat tak terhingga dari People String: 1. $1.6 langsung setelah selesai registrasi. 2. $0.50 untuk setiap teman yang Anda ajak bergabung. 3.

Jadi pekerjaan di People String sangat-sangat enteng, tapi potensi incomenya hugereally huge! Luar biasa.

Sulitkah proses registrasi? Sama sekali tidak.

Cara join:

1. buka http://www.peoplestring.com/?f=satriadibasuki lalu Klik Sign up now.

2. Isi username.

3. Untuk daftar gratis pilih Free Account.

4. Isi formulir.

5. Login.

6. Click Mailbox Cashbox.

7. Klik Take your survey.

8. Jawab survey.

9. Selesai.

Buatlah email khusus hanya untuk People String. Gunakan Gmail, jangan Yahoo karena yahoo sering mendapat gangguan.

Bagaimana caranya menambahkan teman di People String?

People String mengubah kebiasaan-kebiasaan itu menjadi uang. Act and prove it yourself now!

Hanya diperlukan sedikit kemauan saja. Sukses pasti untuk semua.

Good luck & selamat berusaha dan mendapat rejeki tambahan.

What Researchers Say about CALL and CARE

Posted: September 29, 2010 in CALL

British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (BECTA, 2003) reports their analyses of research about how primary and secondary teachers are using ICT in English Curriculum. There is key research evidence about ICT in Reading for students and teachers. For students: (1) Reading interactive storybooks can help primary pupils expand their vocabulary and gain insight into the structure of narrative texts (Segers and Verhoeven, 2002). (2) Using ICT can enable pupils to understand, visualize and interpret difficult texts (Birmingham and Davies, 2001). (3) There are learning gains in areas of phonological awareness, vocabulary development, reading comprehension and spelling (Software Information Industry Association, 2000; Daal and Reitsma, 2000). (4) Computer-assisted reading support systems can be effective in supporting secondary pupils with reading failure (Lynch, 2000). Besides ICT offers many benefits for students, it also gives teachers many benefits as pointed out by the researchers. The key research evidence of about using ICT in reading the for teachers, using ICT texts such as word processors with speech facilities can motivate pupils to read more and help older pupils or more fluent readers understand a text by reading it more rapidly than by listening to it. Speech support can help with unfamiliar word. In addition, electronic texts are redefining literacy by introducing new ways of reading and writing and pupils need a totally different range of reading skills to navigate ICT texts. ICT has created another genre where texts are layered, and can contain internet hyperlinks and moving images which include sound and video. Research suggests that animated graphics, video, digitized pronunciations and hyperlinks necessitate the development of new literacy skills (Karchmer, 2001).

In addition, a growing body of research supports the value of computers, with well designed software, to support reading comprehension instruction. There are some important information can be obtained from the report developed by the Northeast and the Islands Regional Technology in Education Consortium (NEIRTEC, 2004) project, a collaboration of Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), TERC, Education Alliance at Brown University and Learning Innovations at WestEd, funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

In a British study, Medwell (1996); found that early readers increased the accuracy of word recognition and text comprehension significantly when they used electronic books; peers using paper copies of the same books did not show the same gains, even with teacher support. Matthew (1997);  Lewin (1997); (Olson, Foltz, & Wise 1986); Olofsson (1992) ; (Harste 1994; Rowe 1994), also have similar findings. Positive effects of the implementation of CALL in reading also reported by: Dalton, Pisha, Eagleton, Coyne and Deysher (2002, see also Rose and Dalton, 2002); (Anderson-Inman & Horney 1998; MacArthur & Haynes 1995), and (Underwood and Underwood 1998).

Those researches are dealing with many aspects of the implementation of CALL in the discipline of reading, and evidence of good practice and positive outcomes in a number of areas. However, researches using CALL program in Indonesia is still in its infancy. There is a need for a clearer identification of how the positive benefits can be incorporated into classroom practice, at what stage, and using which particular hardware and software. The primary aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of CARE to improve student mastery of reading comprehension.

Computer Assisted Reading in English (CARE)

Posted: September 29, 2010 in CARE

Implementation of CALL in discipline of reading is called “CARE” (Basuki, 2010). CARE is the abbreviation of Computer Assisted Reading in English. Implementation of CALL (CARE) in reading offers many benefits that printed papers do not. CARE not only exposes students with text but also combines it with graphic, sound, and animation.  Interactivity also considered important in CARE, since it is able to give students instant feedbacks.  Hartoyo (2008: 88) quoted the study conducted by Whyte, et al (1995), feedbacks such as “Well, the answer is in correct. Try again, and good luck!”, ”Well.., still incorrect! Have another try”, “Nearly correct” if students answer incorrectly, or responses such as “Good”, “Excellent”, “Well done” if students answer correctly is very important in language learning. Feedback has a significant impact on students’ motivation, which is leading to increased interest in learning.

Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL)

Posted: September 29, 2010 in CALL

Before we get acquainted with the term CALL it will be better if we peel off what ICT is, since both are inherent. ICTs stand for Information and Communication Technologies and are defined, for the purposes of this primer, as a “diverse set of technological tools and resources used to communicate, and to create, disseminate, store, and manage information.” (Tinio, 2000:4). These technologies include computers, the Internet, broadcasting technologies (radio and television), and telephony.

Today, students are unseparated with their laptops.

Recent advances of technology have enabled electronic media to offer useful alternatives for education. The spread of technology throughout the world is making computers an increasingly practical tool for enhancing the learning process. In 1994 Hartoyo introduced the term CALL in Indonesia. Hartoyo (2008: 11) states “the development of Information Technology (IT) has permeated the application of computers in the learning process, which is generally known as Computer Assisted Learning (CAL).” This beneficial impact also touches on language education field. Hartoyo (2008) quoted Kenning (1984) the computer can also be utilized to enhance language learning, and also be used to generate examples to illustrate certain operations, or to stimulate conversation. The implementation of CAL to language is called “CALL” (Hartoyo, 2008: 21). CALL stands for Computer Assisted Language Learning.

Hartoyo (2008: 21) states the CAL program refers to the learning involving the utilization of the computer, usually by means of an interactive-computer system (hypertext/multimedia). According to Esteras and Fabre (2007: 40) multimedia refers to technologies applications that integrate different media: text, graphic, sound, video, and animation. In education, it is used in presentations, or computer-based courses. Shih and Weekly (2005: 13) argue that digital media, either online (Internet-based) or offline (from floppy disks or CDs), that enable reading on computer monitors have the advantage of being multimedia and thereby the potential to be highly engaging. In most cases, however, adding a small number of graphics or sounds is not only acceptable, but desirable, as images and sounds can quickly explain difficult concepts and make material more appealing to students. Discretely the implementation of CALL in discipline of reading is called “CARE” (Basuki. 2010). CARE is the abbreviation of Computer Assisted Reading in English.

Media for Instructional Purposes

Posted: September 29, 2010 in Media

Media, Teaching Aid, and Visual Aid

Media is a tool used as a channel to deliver a message or information from a resource to a receiver (Soeparno, 1987: 1). In teaching and learning context the resource is a teacher, while the receiver is students. Teaching media is different from teaching aid. Soeparno (1987) states a teaching aid is tool used to support teaching and learning process. In short, teaching aid is a hardware which has not been programmed yet, or it is unable to be programmed. A blank black board is a teaching aid which has not been programmed yet (written or drawn), while a chalk and an eraser are teaching aids which unable to be programmed. Thus, a blank black board, a chalk, and an eraser are not categorized as teaching media, but merely teaching aids, since those tools have not been or are unable to be programmed. Media is a combination from both of hardware and software. Software is a device that has to be programmed to hardware. Media is different with visual aids as well. The nature of visual aids that they are tools which visualize a particular concept.

Media, teaching aids, and visual aids are also different from their application. The application of teaching aids and visual aids is completely used by teachers. Without teachers they are unusable. In contrary, there are some media that can be used without any teachers.
